Adults Who Access Medical Services and Information through the Internet

Select a Census Tract
Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the percentage of adults who use the internet or apps for medical services or information on a computer or smartphone in the past 30 days.

Why is this important?

According to the National Institutes of Health, many health-related processes stand to be reshaped by the Internet. In clinical settings, the Internet enables care providers to gain rapid access to information that can aid in the diagnosis of health conditions or the development of suitable treatment plans. It can make patient records, test results, and practice guidelines accessible from the examination room. It can also allow care providers to consult with each other electronically to discuss treatment plans or operative procedures.
The Internet offers greater interactivity and better tailoring of information to individual need such as:
  • Web sites geared to consumer health issues, promotion of various healthy lifestyles, and interventions to prevent the onset of disease.
  • Used to facilitate electronic communications between patients and care providers, typically in the form of electronic mail (e-mail).
  • Emerging as a medium for giving consumers direct access to their personal health records including dates and times of consultations, diagnoses, laboratory results, prescriptions, and more.
  • Overcoming the unequal distribution of clinical expertise through remote medical consultation.
